Police have launched a compulsory investigation into allegations that a sitting Cheongju city council member bought sex from a child.
The Cheongju Cheongwon Police Station in North Chungcheong Province on the morning of the 15th searched the council office, constituency office, and home of City Council member A affiliated with the Cheongju City Council and seized related materials.
A is suspected of having sex with a middle school student multiple times in a car and a motel from October 2024 to May last year and of producing sexual exploitation material, in violation of the Act on the Protection of Children and Youth against Sex Offenses (statutory rape of a minor).
A reportedly demanded sex from a middle school student A met through a chat app by offering money or saying A would buy cigarettes. Police received a report from the student's parents in March and opened an investigation, and A is also said to have suggested dating to the student.
After completing analysis of the seized items, police plan to summon A to investigate the exact circumstances of the case.
