As it became known that a Gwangju-area restaurant recommendation account is included in the Instagram follow list of SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, various interpretations are spreading online.
On the 15th, an image capture showing Chey following an Instagram account named "Gwangju Matjip" spread across online communities and social networking services (SNS).
The image is said to have first been posted on the free board for the Gwangju campus of Chonnam National University on the college-life platform Everytime on the 13th.
The author wrote the post under the title "Looks like Hynix really is coming to Gwangju," adding, "Chey Tae-won followed Gwangju Matjip." The Instagram follow list attached to the post includes the "Gwangju Matjip" account.
The post then moved to other SNS channels and drew attention.
A humor content channel said, "With the head of a large corporation directly following a restaurant account for a specific region, some users are offering interpretations that go beyond simple curiosity to a business move."
The post appears to have been shared more than 18,000 times through Instagram users' direct messages (DM).
Online, some also speculated that Chey's follow might be related to the recently discussed plan to build a semiconductor production base in the southwest region. However, the timing of when the account was followed and the specific background were not confirmed.
Major corporations including SK, Samsung and Amkor have released plans to invest a total of 896 trillion won in the southwest region, where the government has announced a policy to build a second semiconductor production base.
