As the low pressure left behind by Typhoon Bavi, which weakened to a tropical depression over inland China, approaches the Yellow Sea, rain bands are rapidly intensifying over the capital area and central regions starting on the evening of the 14th. From nighttime, heavy rain of up to 50 mm per hour and strong winds are expected to overlap in the capital area and northern Gangwon.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 5:30 p.m. that day, around 5 mm of rain per hour was falling in the capital area, the northern Chungnam West Coast, the South Coast, and Jeju Island. A heavy rain advisory had already been issued for the Incheon and Gyeonggi West Coast, and a preliminary heavy rain advisory was announced for northern Gyeonggi and Cheorwon and Hwacheon in Gangwon.
As of 6 p.m., accumulated precipitation was heaviest in the Jeju highlands. It measured 38.0 mm at Yeongsil, 36.5 mm at Jindalraebat, and 36.0 mm at Sajeibi. In the capital area, it was recorded at 14.0 mm in Gyodong, Ganghwa County, Incheon; 7.0 mm in Yeonsu District; 7.0 mm in Gimpo City, Gyeonggi; and in Seoul, 3.0 mm in Gangbuk District, 2.5 mm in Guro District, and 2.0 mm in Eunpyeong District.
Rain bands are expected to grow stronger from nighttime. In northern Gyeonggi, 30 to 50 mm per hour is expected that night, and 20 to 30 mm per hour in the early morning of the 15th. In Seoul, Incheon, and southern Gyeonggi, 20 to 30 mm per hour is forecast between that evening and the early morning of the 15th, and in the northern inland of Gangwon, heavy rain of 30 to 50 mm per hour is forecast between late that night and the early morning of the 15th.
Through the 15th, expected precipitation is 30 to 100 mm in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi, and the five West Sea islands, with more than 120 mm possible in places in northern Gyeonggi. In the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon, the Chungcheong region, and North Jeolla, 30 to 80 mm is expected, and more than 100 mm is expected in the northern inland of Gangwon.
Heat waves will ease somewhat in the capital area and western regions where it is raining. In the capital area, the Chungcheong region, and parts of Honam, where rain started earlier, heat wave advisories and tropical night advisories have been lifted or eased. However, a heat wave warning remains in effect for the plains of Yeongyang, North Gyeongsang, and the warning is also being maintained for western Andong, the plains of Bonghwa, Gyeongsan, Yecheon, Yeongdeok, and Pohang.
On the 15th, it will be mostly cloudy nationwide, with rain continuing through the afternoon before gradually stopping from the northwest. Morning lows are forecast at 23 to 27 degrees, with daytime highs at 27 to 37 degrees. Along the East Sea coast of Gangwon and in the Gyeongsang region, the maximum heat index will be around 33 degrees, and in North Gyeongsang it will rise to around 35 degrees, making it very hot, and tropical nights may occur in some areas. Strong winds with instantaneous speeds of around 55 km per hour are expected in most regions nationwide.
