Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, said on the 14th it will install a "smart crosswalk system" using artificial intelligence (AI) technology at 17 elementary school routes.
The smart crosswalk is an intelligent traffic safety system that tracks and analyzes the movements of pedestrians and vehicles in real time through advanced AI detection Deep Learning technology. If traffic-vulnerable people such as children with slower walking speeds cannot cross the crosswalk within the signal time or an unexpected situation occurs, the AI recognizes it and automatically extends the walk signal.
It also alerts drivers and pedestrians to danger in real time through electronic display boards and voice warnings.
The school routes where smart crosswalks will be installed this time are 17 locations, including Wangsanchon Elementary School in Cheoin District; Neungwon Elementary School (2 locations); Yongin Elementary School; Dongbaek Elementary School in Giheung District (2 locations); Gugal Elementary School (2 locations); Singal Elementary School (2 locations); Seonong Elementary School (2 locations); Towol Elementary School in Suji District; Saebit Elementary School (2 locations); and Daeji Elementary School (2 locations). To do this, Yongin will invest a total project cost of 1.04 billion won by Sept. this year.
Earlier, by June this year, Yongin had installed smart crosswalks with automatically extended walk signals at 29 locations, including Baekhyeon Elementary School in Giheung District, Dunjun Elementary School in Cheoin District, and Daehyeon Elementary School in Suji District.
Yongin plans to expand the installation of smart crosswalks to 10 senior protection zones, including nursing home, senior centers, and senior welfare centers.
Lee Sang-il, the Yongin mayor, said, "We will build an advanced smart transportation infrastructure that recognizes and addresses unexpected situations on its own to create a 'smart safe city, Yongin,' where parents can feel assured and children can grow up safely."
