The presidential commission "Committee of Light," which records and commemorates citizens' activities that confronted the Dec. 3 martial law, was launched on the 13th and began full-fledged operations.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) said that the Committee of Light held its first meeting that day.
The Committee of Light is composed of 25 members in total, including ex officio Commissioners who are Ministers of 10 ministries and civilian Commissioners. It was launched under the Regulation on the Establishment and Operation of the Committee of Light, enacted in March, and 15 civilian Commissioners, including Chairperson Park Mi-kyung, were appointed.
At the first meeting held that day, the committee received a briefing on the Committee of Light's main work plan and established detailed operating rules covering the committee's operation and the donation of records.
In addition, it reviewed the "basic plan for managing records of the Light Revolution," which will be a core project going forward. The records management plan was established to systematically collect, preserve, and utilize records related to the Light Revolution. The committee includes specific measures to diversify the collection system for materials, classify and store them systematically, and share them with the public.
The committee plans to continue promoting various commemorative projects so that all people can honor the spirit of defending the Constitution of the Republic of Korea and democracy, not stopping at this records management project. Possible initiatives include designating a commemorative day, installing commemorative symbols, holding contests, and hosting citizen forums.
Yoon Ho-jung, the Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS), who serves as the committee's secretary Commissioner and a government Commissioner, said, "The government will widely promote to the world the great democratic spirit that the people of the Republic of Korea demonstrated that day, and will support its proper succession to future generations without the slightest distortion."
Chairperson Park Mi-kyung of the Committee of Light said, "Beyond the records management project, we will take the lead in achieving genuine national unity and in establishing and spreading worldwide the values of citizen-participatory democracy through various recording and commemorative projects."
