The special investigation team of the National Office of Investigation (NOI) under the Korean National Police Agency, which is probing alleged misconduct in the investigation of the high school girl murder case "Jang Yoon-gi case," searched the office of the Gwangju police Commissioner on the 11th.
The special investigation team said it searched three locations, including the office of the Gwangju police Commissioner, and two locations, including the office of the Gwangsan Police Station chief in Gwangju.
They are also securing related evidence at a total of seven locations, including the offices of senior officials who were in the command line of the Jang Yoon-gi case at the time. The special investigation team on the 6th arrested and detained Inspector A, the head of the investigation team in the criminal division of the Gwangsan Police Station who handled the case, on suspicion of destroying evidence.
Earlier, around 12:11 a.m. on May 5, Jang Yoon-gi was indicted and detained on charges including fatally stabbing Lee Chae-won, 16, with a weapon on a main road in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, and inflicting serious injuries on a male student who came to help Lee. In the process of conducting a supplementary investigation after receiving the case from police, the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office found that Inspector A had dozens of phone calls with Jang's father, who was then a senior police official, and handed over evidence.
The Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office, which is investigating allegations of evidence destruction and leaks of investigative information that arose from Jang's arrest through the handover process, also booked the Gwangsan Police Station chief and the head of the criminal division the previous day. The investigations surrounding this case are currently being conducted separately by the prosecution and the police.
