The second special counsel team (Special Counsel Kwon Chang-young) moved to take former Army Ground Operations Commanding General Kang Ho-pil into custody over allegations of involvement in an insurrection.
On the 11th, according to legal sources, the second special counsel team sought an arrest warrant for Kang on charges of engaging in important duties related to insurrection. A warrant hearing will be held on the 13th at the Seoul Central District Court.
Kang is suspected of involvement in setting up an internal situation room at the Ground Operations Command after the declaration of martial law. He is also suspected of taking part in the martial law by ordering the convening of the crisis response team and command staff. He was found to have convened the crisis response team via a voice broadcast system at 10:36 p.m. on Dec. 3, 2024, immediately after martial law was declared.
Kang denies the allegations, saying he did not know about the martial law in advance and did not take part in it.
