Acting Commissioner General Yu Jae-seong apologized over allegations of a shoddy investigation and collusion by police related to the "Jang Yun-gi case," saying, "We are very sorry for causing concern to the public."
Yu stated accordingly to reporters after returning to Korea through Terminal 2 of Incheon International Airport early on the 10th.
Yu moved up his business trip schedule by a day to return. Yu said, "I returned early during the trip schedule," and added, "That is how seriously I recognize the gravity of this matter."
Regarding the Jang Yun-gi case spilling into a controversy over abolishing prosecutors' supplementary investigation authority, Yu said, "I believe it will be decided legislatively and in policy terms after sufficient debate in the National Assembly," and added, "During the course of the debate, the police will also present necessary opinions."
Yu plans to preside over a video conference with the police leadership starting at 9:20 a.m. that day. As distrust of the police investigation has risen due to the Jang Yun-gi case, the Korean National Police Agency the previous day proposed creating a "reform task force to enhance trust in police investigations (TF, reform TF)" and an in-house "internal corruption investigation unit," among other measures.
