On the 9th, it became known that the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul plans to summon Kim Young-su, head of the Defense Rights Research Institute, who raised allegations that Ahn Gyu-baek, Minister of National Defense, deserted his post during his service as a defense soldier, for a complainant interview. Kim is said to appear on the 16th.
On the 27th of last month, Kim filed a complaint against the Minister for violating the National Assembly testimony and appraisal law. The gist is that the Minister's answer during the National Assembly confirmation hearing in July last year—that there was absolutely no desertion or detention—was false testimony.
Kim claims that in 1984, while serving as a defense soldier in a unit under the Army's 35th Division, the Minister deserted his post for about seven months, was later arrested by the military police, and, after receiving 30 days of detention and including the period of desertion, served about eight additional months before being released from the call-up in Aug. 1985.
At the confirmation hearing, the Minister explained it as an "administrative error in military service, with the period of attending university counted." The Ministry of National Defense said that day, "As stated during the confirmation hearing, the Minister of National Defense completed his service normally."
