Prosecutors have launched a compulsory investigation into alleged collusion between the father of "the high school girl killer" Jang Yoon-gi and the investigation team.
According to legal sources, on the 7th the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office sent investigators to the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, which handled the Jang Yoon-gi case, to execute search and seizure warrants. Crimes committed by police officers can be pursued separately by prosecutors and police.
Prosecutors booked multiple police officers, including personnel from the criminal affairs team, on charges including leaking official secrets and destroying evidence.
The booked officers are accused of, after urgently arresting Jang Yoon-gi and before handing the case over to prosecutors, omitting key evidence such as a sex doll, cable ties, and a vehicle during the investigation, and leaking investigation details—including search and seizure and arrest warrant contents—to Jang's father, an incumbent police officer.
Considering the gravity of the matter, prosecutors decided to conduct a direct investigation separate from the police's internal misconduct probe.
Police urgently arrested the Head of Team in charge of the Jang Yoon-gi case the previous day on suspicion of evidence destruction, and elevated the lead investigative body from the Gwangju Police Agency's dedicated team to the National Office of Investigation (NOI). They also decided to dispatch personnel to Gwangju on the same day.
