Kim Chang-soo Whisky Andong Distillery has been built in Pungsan-eup, Andong, North Gyeongsang. Observers say the development of a high value-added food industry using local agricultural products and the K-whisky industry will accelerate.
According to North Gyeongsang Province on the 7th, Kim Chang-soo Whisky Andong Distillery involved a total project cost of 12 billion won. It is equipped with production facilities with a total floor area of 2,109 square meters and state-of-the-art distillation and aging equipment. It can produce 140 kiloliters of whisky per year, or about 200,000 bottles based on 700 milliliters. Expectations are high that it will help establish a stable production base for single malt whisky and strengthen the competitiveness of the domestic whisky industry.
Kim Chang-soo Whisky Distillery is a company founded by Kim Chang-soo, a Korean single malt whisky distiller. Its flagship product, "Gimpo Edition," has many enthusiasts and continues to sell out.
Marking the completion of the Andong Distillery, Kim Chang-soo Whisky Distillery plans to build a raw material procurement system linked to local agriculture, including using barley grown under contract with farms in Yecheon County as whisky ingredients. Malt dregs (a byproduct of malted barley) generated during manufacturing will be supplied as feed to nearby livestock farms, operating a resource-circulating production system.
Hwang Myeong-seok, vice governor for administrative affairs of North Gyeongsang Province, said, "The completion of the Kim Chang-soo Whisky Andong Distillery is a new starting point for fostering a high value-added food industry using local agricultural products and for creating a resource-circulating industrial ecosystem," adding, "We will actively support North Gyeongsang in establishing itself as the center of Korea's K-whisky industry."
