Police have begun tracking down the person who posted a message claiming explosives were installed at Gwangju Jeil High School (Gwangjuilgo).
The Korean National Police Agency said in a media notice on the 5th that it had launched an investigation after a public threat claiming explosives had been installed, adding that such acts are a clear crime that infringes students' right to learn and disrupts the peaceful daily lives of the public.
The Korean National Police Agency said it will respond strictly, immediately opening investigations on charges including violations of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection and public threats if posts are written that slander or defame the related school or students or if messages such as bombing threats are uploaded.
Police received a report the previous day that an online post had been made threatening that explosives were installed at Gwangjuilgo. Together with fire authorities, they evacuated students and staff and searched the campus, but no explosives were found.
According to police, the threatening post reportedly claimed that the future of Baejae High School students, who were heavily disciplined for mocking cheers toward the Gwangjuilgo baseball team, had been trampled.
Meanwhile, the Baejae High School baseball team plans to visit Gwangjuilgo in person on the afternoon of the 6th to issue an official apology for mocking the May 18 Democratization Movement and disparaging the region. Gwangjuilgo has asked police to protect school facilities. Police also plan to prepare for any contingencies, such as unexpected acts by outsiders.
