A threatening post claiming explosives were planted at Gwangju Jeil High School was uploaded online, prompting police and fire authorities to launch an investigation.
According to Gwangju Bukbu Police Station on the 4th, police received a report at about 11:50 a.m. that a post claiming explosives were planted at Gwangju Jeil High School in Buk-gu, Gwangju had been posted on the online community "DC Inside."
The post reportedly included the phrase "trampled on the future of Paejae High School youths," along with content threatening to harm students, coaches and teachers.
Police dispatched to the scene are conducting a search inside Gwangju Jeil High School with fire authorities to check for hazardous materials.
About 20 people, including faculty and students who were at the school, were evacuated, according to authorities. No explosives have been found so far.
Considering that an official apology related to the Paejae High School baseball team's mockery of the May 18 pro-democracy movement and disparagement of the region is scheduled for the 6th at Gwangju Il High School, police are also investigating whether the threatening post is connected to that matter.
Police said they are currently tracking the author through an internet protocol (IP) address.
Earlier, on the 29th of last month, some Paejae High School baseball student-athletes chanted toward the opposing dugout during a game against Gwangju Il High School at Mokdong Stadium in Seoul, saying, "You should go, you should go, you should go to Starbucks," and "Tank Day." The remarks sparked public anger, and the Paejae High School baseball team was handed a six-month suspension from tournaments.
