An on-duty police officer who ran over a woman in her 60s lying on the road with a patrol car, causing her death, is under police investigation.
According to police on the 3rd, the Incheon Michuhol Police Station booked and is questioning A, a police officer in her 20s assigned to a precinct, on suspicion of death by traffic accident under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents.
At about 12:45 a.m. that day, Officer A was driving a patrol car on a side street in Sungui-dong, Michuhol District, Incheon, when A is accused of running over B, a woman in her 60s who was lying on the road, and causing her death.
At the time of the crash, Officer A had responded to the scene with Sergeant C, who is assigned to the same precinct, after a report that "a person has collapsed on the road." However, it was found that during the approach to the scene, A failed to spot B, the person to be rescued, and caused the accident.
According to police, the site of the crash was a relatively dark side street at a point adjoining a left-turn section.
During questioning, Officer A reportedly said to the effect that "I did not properly see that B was lying down."
A police official said, "We plan to verify the detailed circumstances of the crash by analyzing nearby CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage and determine whether to seek an arrest warrant," adding, "As for Sergeant C, the passenger, we view there was no duty of care and that C is not subject to punishment."
