The National Assembly's special committee on a parliamentary probe (the special committee) looking into the ballot paper shortage during the 9th nationwide local elections (the June 3 local elections) announced a site inspection at the Songpa District ballot counting center in Seoul on the morning of the 2nd, triggering scuffles at the scene.
The special committee plans to visit the Olympic Park Handball Gymnasium, where the Songpa District counting center had been set up, on the morning of the day. Protesters are split over whether to accept the on-site inspection.
During this process, people pushed each other, and one protester collapsed, prompting the 119 rescue team to respond. Police have separated the participants.
Some protesters are demanding a special prosecutor led by the opposition party instead of the special committee. There are also protesters holding placards that read "Begin a verification process that people can agree with."
In front of Entrance 2-1 of the Handball Gymnasium, the so-called "Oldark" is holding a placard that says "Stop the parliamentary probe without the people's consent." Oldark is the woman who held the door and blocked a sports group from entering the arena. Hwang Kyo-ahn, leader of Liberty and Innovation, and others also oppose the special committee's on-site inspection.
The special committee will conduct an on-site verification at the Songpa District counting center on the day. It is understood there are about 2.47 million ballot papers inside the Songpa District counting center. The ballot box and ballot papers from Jamsil 7-dong No. 2 polling station, where voting continued until 10 p.m. due to the ballot paper shortage, are also at the Songpa District counting center.
