Son Heung-min, captain of the Korea men's national soccer team, said about the failure to reach the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North and Central America, "It was a tournament more precious to me than anything, and it feels like the 'stage of a child's dream' I always talked about has collapsed, so I feel heavy-hearted and in pain."
On the 30th, Son said on his social media (SNS), "First, I want to sincerely say I am sorry to the people of the Republic of Korea and to the fans who love soccer," and stated accordingly.
Son said, "As someone who loves soccer, if I had watched a game like this, I think it would have been truly heartbreaking, frustrating and difficult," and added, "A single word of apology cannot contain the fans' disappointment and hurt, so even saying I am sorry feels woefully insufficient."
He continued, "To be honest, even now it is not easy to accept this reality," and said, "I feel a great sense of responsibility for the fact that I ultimately failed to repay the time and hearts you gave us, and your unwavering support and love."
Son said, "I will once again do my best in my place so that I can win back the hearts of the people of the Republic of Korea and soccer fans," and added, "I will run as if my life depends on it so I can bring you joy again."
He added, "I have never forgotten the promises I made to the fans," and said, "I will pour everything out and prepare well again until I am needed."
Son urged support rather than criticism toward other players. He said, "I feel heavy and sorry, but I earnestly ask that instead of giving too much criticism and hurt to all the players, you send warm support and encouragement."
