The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said on the 26th that, under the Itaewon disaster truth-finding law, it has designated a local merchant, the late Baek, who had been recognized as a victim while alive for taking part in rescue efforts during the Oct. 29 Itaewon disaster, as a victim of the disaster.
Accordingly, the number of victims of the deadly crowd crush in the nightlife district of Itaewon changed from 159 to 160.
The deceased ran a bar near a hotel at the time of the disaster and carried out emergency rescue activities, including moving victims. After comprehensive verification by experts and related agencies, it was recognized that the psychological and emotional trauma the deceased experienced was related to the deadly crowd crush in the nightlife district of Itaewon.
Under this decision, the bereaved family will receive support in accordance with the Disaster and Safety Act and the Itaewon disaster truth-finding law.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) said it will continue to do its best to ensure that necessary support can be provided without delay under relevant laws while protecting the honor and privacy of victims and their families.
