More than 200 teenagers confessed to gambling within a month of the cyber gambling voluntary report program.
According to the Korean National Police Agency and others on the 22nd, 294 voluntary reports of cyber gambling have been filed since on the 18th of last month. There were 244 reports filed by the individuals themselves and 50 filed by guardians.
The average gambling period was 12 months, and an average of 3 million won per person was used for gambling. There was also a case of spending 60 million won on gambling. The issue of teenage cyber gambling in the Netflix drama "True Education" was not merely exaggerated.
By gender, males accounted for 93% (274), the vast majority. High school students made up 60% (176), and middle school students 40% (118).
At a single high school in the Gangwon region, 48 students reported experiencing cyber gambling. At a nearby high school in the region, 20 students also reported cyber gambling.
There were also secondary crimes committed to raise gambling funds. A high school student living in North Jeolla was caught by police after breaking into cars by opening doors and stealing items.
The government plans to continue the voluntary reporting system until the end of August. Eligible reporters are teenagers under 19 who have experienced cyber gambling or their guardians. All reports are received through the 117 School Violence Report and Counseling Center.
