Prosecutors asked the court to sentence former Gyeonggi Province vice governor for peace Lee Hwa-young, who was put on trial on charges including perjury over a so-called "salmon drinking party," to two years in prison and a fine of 5 million won.
On the 19th, according to legal sources, at the 10th court hearing of Lee's citizens' participation trial held before the Suwon District Court Criminal Division 11 (presiding judge Senior Judge Song Byung-hoon), prosecutors sought a fine of 5 million won for violating the Political Funds Act and two years in prison for the remaining charges.
In Oct. 2024, Lee appeared at a National Assembly hearing and is accused of giving false testimony related to the so-called "salmon drinking party" allegations, in violation of the Act on Testimony and Appraisal before the National Assembly.
Lee is also accused of receiving illegal political funds in a split-donation scheme from former SSANGBANGWOOL Group Chairman Kim Sung-tae and others, and of pushing ahead with Gyeonggi Province's projects to support North Korea (golden pine trees and children's nutritional food support) by ignoring working-level staff objections and unjustly forcing the projects through (abuse of authority).
After Lee's final statement in the afternoon, the jury is scheduled to begin deliberations. They will vote on guilt or innocence for each charge and convey their views to the court, and the court will render a verdict based on that. If deliberations run long, the final sentence is expected to come around the early morning of the 20th.
