The National Forensic Service estimated that some of the mutilated human remains found at a recycling processing facility in Incheon are those of an adult.
According to Incheon Yeonsu Police Station and others on the 16th, the National Forensic Service delivered its appraisal to police on the 15th, saying the mutilated body parts are presumed to belong to an adult with a height of 161–165 centimeters.
Earlier, considering that the size of the discovered foot was 210 millimeters, police had presumed the victim to be a young student or a woman and were checking nearby schools to see if there were any students with long-term absences.
Police said they will proceed with the investigation accordingly, as the latest appraisal increases the likelihood that the victim is an adult. Police have set up an investigation headquarters of 64 members, and the case is under investigation.
Police began investigating after part of a person's left leg, wrapped in bandages, was found at about 2:28 p.m. on the 10th at the Southern Regional Resource Recovery Center in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu District, Incheon.
At the time, the measured dimensions of the discovered remains were a foot size of 210 millimeters and a length of 41 centimeters from just below the knee to the heel. However, the police forensic team explained that there could be differences from when the body was intact due to drying after amputation.
From the afternoon of the 9th to the morning of the 10th, the police investigation headquarters identified several resource collection trucks that entered the center, secured each truck's dashcam footage and driver information, and tracked their routes, while also verifying the victim's identity by comparing with missing persons' DNA.
Police also addressed the spread of unverified speculation online regarding the case, saying, "The indiscriminate spread of related content could hinder the investigation," and added, "Those responsible could face charges such as defamation of the referenced parties, so please refrain from sharing."
