Suh Kyung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women's University, called for a public apology from the perpetrator and for the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to come up with measures to prevent a recurrence after a Korean YouTuber was subjected to racial discrimination at a 2026 FIFA North and Central America World Cup stadium.
On the 14th, Suh wrote on Facebook, "Controversy has arisen after it became known that at the first group-stage match between Korea and the Czech Republic at the 2026 FIFA North and Central America World Cup, a Korean YouTuber was racially discriminated against by a Mexico soccer fan," and stated accordingly.
Suh also shared a photo from the Czech match that captured a Mexico man sitting in the row behind a Korean YouTuber, Inonyang, pulling his eyes back with both index fingers in a selfie video she filmed. Suh explained that pulling the eyes back with fingers has been pointed out as a representative act of racial discrimination used to disparage Asians.
Suh said that Politico, a local Mexico outlet, identified the perpetrator as Ulises Fernando Bernal Miramontes, president of the Jalisco Civil Engineering Association. Politico reportedly criticized it as "a shameful act by Miramontes of publicly mocking a female spectator's appearance."
Suh said, "It is unthinkable for something like this to happen at a World Cup venue where the global village becomes one beyond nationality and race," adding, "Miramontes must issue a public apology, and FIFA should take this incident as a lesson and be careful to ensure this never happens again."
