Police Inspector Baek Hae-ryong, who has raised allegations of outside pressure on a drug investigation, filed a public interest report with the Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission and applied for whistleblower protection.
Baek said in a statement on the 14th that on the 12th he submitted about 6,000 pages of materials, including more than 5,400 pages of investigation records and official documents, to the Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) and completed registration as a whistleblower.
Baek said that over the past 1,000 days Baek has endured various pressure and disadvantages to secure a chance to continue the investigation, and will no longer ask state agencies for an opportunity to investigate.
Baek said that while seconded to the joint customs-drug investigation team at the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office, Baek was excluded from investigation meetings and the process of sharing materials, and that communications investigations and searches and seizures were not properly carried out.
Baek also said Baek will disclose related records going forward and leave the judgment on the truth of the case to the public and history.
Baek has alleged that there was outside pressure during the drug investigation involving customs officials. With the latest whistleblower report and protection request, the related controversy is expected to draw renewed attention.
