Director Yeon Sang-ho's zombie film "Colony" surpassed 5 million moviegoers on the 24th day of its release on the 13th.
Distributor SHOWBOX said that as of this morning, "Colony" passed a cumulative 5 million moviegoers. Among this year's releases, "Colony" is the second film to surpass 5 million admissions, following "The King's Warden." As of the 12th, "The King's Warden" drew 16,895,000 viewers.
"Colony" tells the story of survivors, including Se-jeong, a professor of biotechnology, trying to stay alive in a sealed-off building amid an outbreak. Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-bin, Kim Shin-rok, and Ko Soo star.
"Colony" is also a zombie film from director Yeon Sang-ho, following "Train to Busan" (2016) and "Peninsula" (2020). It was invited to the Midnight Screening at the 79th Cannes Film Festival last month and was screened.
"Colony" drew audiences at the fastest pace among this year's releases. After opening on the 21st last month, it reached 1 million viewers on the fourth day. It hit 2 million on the fifth day, 3 million on the 10th day, and surpassed 4 million on the 14th day.
However, the point at which it crossed 5 million was slower than "The King's Warden." "The King's Warden" surpassed 5 million on the 18th day of its release.
Meanwhile, Minister Chae Hwi-young of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism celebrated "Colony" passing 5 million by posting photos on social media (SNS) of posing with Jun Ji-hyun imitating the film's infected.
The Minister said, "I deeply revere the contemporary dancers, choreographers, and actors who portrayed the infected with spine-chilling fear," adding, "Their overwhelming expressions and movements, unmatched anywhere, were truly at the level of art. I give them thunderous applause."
