Police launched an investigation after an object believed to be part of a human body was found at a recycling waste sorting facility in Incheon.
According to Incheon Yeonsu Police Station on the 11th, at about 2:28 p.m. on the 10th, a report came in that one object believed to be a human leg had been found during recycling waste sorting work at the Songdo-dong Resource Recovery Center in Yeonsu District, Incheon.
Police, who began investigating after the report, collected the object and conducted DNA analysis, confirming it was part of a leg, a human tissue.
Police on the day asked the National Forensic Service to conduct an autopsy and additional DNA analysis, and are said to have received a preliminary opinion.
They are conducting door-to-door inquiries centered on the recycling waste collection area and are also analyzing closed-circuit (CC)TV footage.
Based on the foot size and other factors, they are not ruling out the possibility that the deceased was a young student, and have sent an official cooperation letter to Incheon-area schools asking them to check for students with long-term absences.
To determine whether a crime was involved, police formed an investigation headquarters of 64 members, led by the Yeonsu Police Station chief. The headquarters is centered on the violent crime team of the Yeonsu Police Station's criminal division and the metropolitan investigation unit of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency.
