Korea Semiconductor Meister High School in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, held an admissions briefing with 120 seats on May 30 this year. As prospective students and parents poured in, it was hard to find an empty seat at the venue. Applications exceeded capacity, and the school separately announced the schedule for a second briefing to be held on the 20th of this month.
A Korea Semiconductor Meister High School official said, "Interest from higher-achieving students has increased compared with last year," and added, "This year, many students and parents asked specific questions about the outlook for the semiconductor industry and employment after graduation."
In the past, admission to elite universities was seen as a symbol of a stable path, but recently interest has grown in meister high schools, where students can aim to land jobs at major corporations right after graduation. In particular, as the semiconductor market recovers and expectations rise for high salaries and bonuses at large corporations such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, competition to enter semiconductor meister high schools is heating up.
◇ Semiconductor meister high school competition doubles
According to the education sector on the 2nd, the acceptance rate for the first cohort of new students at Korea Semiconductor Meister High School this year was 1.67 to 1. Before Gyeongju Technical High School in North Gyeongsang Province was converted into Korea Semiconductor Meister High School, last year's rate was 0.88 to 1. In one year, competition nearly doubled.
Chungbuk Semiconductor High School, the oldest semiconductor meister high school in Korea, also recorded a new student competition rate of 2.26 to 1 this year. That was up from 1.51 to 1 last year. The education sector believes the rapid recovery in the performance of major semiconductor corporations such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix since the second half of last year also influenced the career choices of students and parents.
Meister high schools are special-purpose high schools that provide vocational education tailored to the needs of industry. They run curricula that allow students to enter society as skilled technicians immediately after graduation. Currently, 58 meister high schools in various fields, including machinery and manufacturing, energy, bio, and automobiles, are operating nationwide.
◇ Briefings fill up early on hopes of a semiconductor boom
The recent interest in meister high schools is evident at admissions briefings. Meister high schools typically hold admissions briefings in May–June and Sep.–Oct., but this year, many first-half sessions closed earlier than planned. Some schools are holding additional sessions or separately guiding waitlisted applicants.
Korea Digital Media High School, a specialized school that trains information technology (IT) and software talent, also held an admissions briefing on the 23rd of last month. About 2,500 prospective applicants and parents took part that day.
In particular, some schools are converting into semiconductor meister high schools. Seoul Semiconductor High School, the first semiconductor meister high school in Seoul, is scheduled to open in March 2027 after final approval from the Ministry of Education in Aug. The predecessor, Huigyeong Technical High School, was designated a meister high school in 2024 and is preparing to start anew as a school specialized in the semiconductor field.
Gyeonggi Province is also pushing its first conversion to a semiconductor meister high school. Yongin Semiconductor High School will first open as a specialized high school in 2027, aiming to convert to a meister high school in 2028. The designation will be decided this month after an evaluation by the Ministry of Education.
An official at a major cram school said, "As expectations have risen that students can get jobs at large corporations through meister high schools, not only upper-middle students but even top-tier students are considering them as practical options."
◇ Seven out of 10 meister high school graduates get jobs… "more practical than college"
One reason interest in meister high schools is growing is their relatively high employment rate. According to the Ministry of Education and the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI) in the "2025 Employment Statistics for Vocational High School Graduates," meister high schools had an average employment rate of 73.1%. That far outpaced specialized high schools (52.4%) and vocational tracks at general high schools (38.2%).
A, who graduated earlier this year from the electrical department of a meister high school in the Seoul metropolitan area, passed a special recruitment at Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) while in the second year. Since completing military service after graduation was a condition of employment, A plans to join the company officially after discharge.
A said, "I had many doubts about whether I could maintain top grades if I went to an academic-track high school, and since my goal was employment, I entered a meister high school," adding, "In the end, it was a choice I do not regret." A also noted, "It was good that I could prepare for related certifications by faithfully following only the school classes without going to a cram school."
B, a parent in their 40s considering sending a child to a semiconductor high school, said, "My son's grades are around the middle, and he does not show much interest in studying, so I am thinking of recommending a meister high school that fits his aptitude," adding, "I judge that learning specialized skills and gaining early employment at good corporations will be more advantageous, so I am persuading my husband, who prefers the academic track."
◇ Building expertise but also mid-course dropouts… aptitude check is essential
The popularity of meister high schools specialized in specific industries, not only semiconductors, is also rising. Korea Fire Meister High School, the only meister high school in the nation in the firefighting field, has shown an admissions competition rate of around 3 to 1 every year.
A teacher at Korea Fire Meister High School said, "Just three years ago, we contacted middle schools directly to ask for chances to explain our school, but these days middle schools ask us first to hold briefings," adding, "Applicants have expanded not only from Gangwon, where the school is located, but as far as Jeju Island."
However, some note that going to a meister high school is not the right choice for every student. Because meister high schools focus on teaching skills in specific industries, they can be a strong fit if a student's aptitude aligns, but otherwise it can lead to maladjustment.
A meister high school teacher said, "Every year there are students who, unable to adapt to specialized technical education after admission, decide to drop out or transfer after just one semester," adding, "Students and parents should carefully consider whether the field fits the student's aptitude enough to make it a career before applying."
