Prosecutors and police each formed a dedicated investigative team to intensively probe the explosion at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant that left seven people dead or injured.
On the 1st, the Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office said it assigned the probe to a 10-person task force led by Head of Team Jeon Young-woo, Director General of Criminal Division 4, comprising three prosecutors and six investigators.
The Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office said it will work closely with related agencies, including police and the Labor Ministry, to thoroughly determine the cause of the accident and where responsibility lies.
The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency also plans to form a dedicated investigation team led by Head of Team Oh Dong-uk (Senior Superintendent General), chief of the investigation bureau at the Daejeon agency, centered on officers from the regional investigation unit, violent crime unit and forensic science unit.
At about 10:59 a.m. on the 1st, an explosion and fire occurred at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant in Oesam-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, killing five people and leaving two with burns of varying severity.
That afternoon, police conducted an initial on-site inspection with fire authorities and the National Forensic Service, and plan to carry out a joint detailed on-site examination with related agencies at about 10 a.m. on the 2nd. The National Forensic Service is also working to identify the deceased through DNA analysis.
