An explosion at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant in Yuseong District, Daejeon, on the morning of the 1st caused casualties.
According to police and fire authorities, as of 12 p.m. that day, four people were killed and two were injured in the explosion. The remaining one person was confirmed to have evacuated.
A report came in at about 10:59 a.m. that an explosion had occurred in a laboratory at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant that morning.
Fire authorities issued Level 1 response at about 11:17 a.m. that day and began extinguishing efforts. They mobilized 85 firefighters and 25 pieces of fire equipment, bringing the main blaze under control at about 11:49 a.m.
The Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant has handled work such as large propulsion system development and production and propellant charging. Police and fire authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the accident once the firefighting is completed.
This is not the first explosion at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant. In May 2018, an explosion killed two people at the scene, and three others who were being treated at a hospital also died. In Feb. 2019, an explosion occurred in a propellant shaping room, killing three people.
