It was revealed that Jang Yoon-gi, 23, accused of killing a teenage high school girl in downtown Gwangju, initially chased a female coworker he had raped and stalked, then changed the target of the crime.
Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station said on the 29th that Jang Yoon-gi was recently additionally referred to prosecutors on charges of violating the anti-stalking law, violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (rape), and unlawful confinement, among others.
According to police, Jang Yoon-gi raped a foreign woman who was his coworker in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan District, Gwangju, on the 3rd and then stalked her multiple times. He committed the crime after the victim refused his demand to date, it was found.
Police determined that after breaking into the victim's residence and committing a sex crime, Jang Yoon-gi decided to kill out of fear the crime would be exposed. The same afternoon, he purchased a weapon, gloves, and other items in advance and loitered around the victim's residence, it was found.
Feeling threatened, the victim reported the stalking to police and fled to another area. Police implemented personal protection measures and sent Jang Yoon-gi a stalking warning text.
Afterward, to avoid location tracking, Jang Yoon-gi discarded his existing mobile phone, used a Wi-Fi–only device, and searched for the victim for about 30 hours.
Police believe that when Jang Yoon-gi failed to find the victim, he committed the crime against a teenage high school girl who was on her way home. He is accused of killing the girl with a weapon and injuring a male student who rushed over after hearing her scream by swinging the weapon at him.
Earlier, police arrested and referred Jang Yoon-gi on charges of murder, attempted murder, and preparation for murder. Prosecutors extended the detention period and are continuing supplementary investigations into the circumstances of the crime and whether it was planned.
