The Ministry of Justice recovered 139.6 billion won in criminal proceeds last year and brought 274 fugitives back to Korea.
On the 25th, the Ministry of Justice said it had enforced 495.8 billion won in criminal revenue confiscations from 2022 through March this year. That amounts to about 120 billion won per year on average.
The Ministry of Justice also said it strengthened international cooperation with foreign judicial authorities, nearly quadrupling the number of extraditions from 70 in 2022 to 274 last year.
This year, through last month, 97 people were extradited to Korea, including the so-called "married couple scam ring" that carried out romance scams in Cambodia and Park Wang-yeol, known as the "Philippine drug king."
Regarding its four straight wins in investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) since 2024, it noted, "As the representative of the public interest and Korea's agent, we protected trillions of won in taxpayers' money."
Earlier, the Ministry of Justice achieved four straight ISDS wins since 2024 against a Chinese investor, Lone Star, Elliott and Schindler. In ISDS cases formally filed against the Korean government to date (10 cases), it has won nearly half.
The Ministry of Justice said, "Prosecutors, once known as 'knife-wielders' and focused only on investigations and indictments, are strengthening their status as 'representatives of the public interest,'" adding, "We will continue to devote ourselves to our role as representatives of the public interest going forward."
