At about 10:45 p.m. on the 23rd, a fire broke out on the third floor of a multi-family house in Mangwol-dong, Hanam, Gyeonggi Province. One person died in the incident, and three residents who were in the apartment at the time of the fire evacuated on their own.
According to Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters, the person who died in the fire was a resident in their 70s. The victim was found dead on the third floor, which is presumed to be where the blaze started. Three other residents who were on the second and third floors evacuated on their own.
Responding to a witness report that said, "Flames are visible from the third floor," fire authorities deployed 19 pieces of equipment and 48 personnel to conduct suppression efforts, bringing the main blaze under control in about an hour at around 11:47 p.m.
In the early stages of the fire, intense flames and thick black smoke shot up, prompting numerous 119 calls from residents in nearby apartment complexes and dwellings.
Police and fire authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage once the flames are completely extinguished.
