Kim Yong-man, chair of Kim Ga-nae, who was put on trial on charges of attempting to rape a female employee by taking her to a motel after a company dinner while she was drunk, received a suspended prison sentence in the first trial.
On the 21st, according to legal sources, the Criminal Agreement Division 14 of the Seoul Northern District Court (Presiding Judge Oh Byung-hee, Director General) sentenced Chair Kim, who was charged with attempted quasi-rape, to three years in prison, suspended for five years. The court also ordered 40 hours of sex offense treatment lectures.
The court said, "Given the nature and circumstances of the crime, the culpability is very poor, and it appears the victim suffered considerable sexual humiliation and mental distress, so a heavy punishment is necessary."
However, explaining the sentencing, the court noted it considered that "the defendant is reflecting on the wrongdoing, and although the victim later reversed the agreement and intent not to seek punishment, an agreement was reached on Sept. 27, 2023, and 300 million won in settlement money was paid to the victim."
On Sept. 23, 2023, after a company dinner ended, Chair Kim took a female employee, who was intoxicated and unable to resist, to a nearby motel and attempted to rape her but failed, and was put on trial on charges of attempt. Earlier, prosecutors asked the court to sentence Chair Kim to five years in prison.
