The National Fire Agency said on the 14th that it signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Indonesia to strengthen cooperation on disaster management.
Kim Seung-ryong, Commissioner of the National Fire Agency, met Muhammad Tito Karnavian, Minister of Home Affairs, the previous day at the Home Affairs Ministry building in Jakarta, Indonesia. The two sides discussed cooperation on Korea's 119 emergency call system, advancing disaster management systems, strengthening disaster response capabilities, and expanding cooperation in the firefighting industry.
In particular, given Indonesia's disaster environment, where major natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and floods are frequent, they agreed on the importance of swift call intake and building an integrated dispatch system, and shared views on the need to strengthen disaster response capabilities using Korea's 119 emergency call system.
Indonesia is currently expanding its nationwide 112 integrated emergency call system, but only 142 of the 514 local governments offer 24-hour service. The National Fire Agency and Indonesia's Home Affairs Ministry agreed to explore the potential for cooperation on Korea's 119 emergency call system, focusing on major cities including Jakarta.
They also agreed to pool efforts to expand exchanges in the firefighting industry, along with information sharing and technology cooperation in disaster response and exchanges in training and education.
The National Fire Agency has continued official development assistance (ODA) projects for Indonesia. From 2018 to 2025, it supported a total of 36 fire engines and is expanding invitation-based training in advanced disaster response fields such as water rescue, electric vehicle fire response, and big data-based fire prediction.
Minister Karnavian said, "Indonesia is highly prone to natural disasters, so building an advanced disaster response system is very important," and added, "Korea's 119 emergency call system and training and education framework are expected to greatly help strengthen Indonesia's disaster response capabilities."
Kim, Commissioner of the National Fire Agency, said, "Based on Korea's experience operating an intelligent 119 emergency call system and advanced disaster management technologies, we will expand cooperation with Indonesia and support efforts to strengthen disaster response capabilities in the ASEAN region and invigorate cooperation in the firefighting industry."
