A woman in her 20s, identified as A, who was put on trial on charges of lying to her boyfriend that she was pregnant to get money, received a suspended prison sentence.
According to legal sources on the 13th, the Busan District Court Criminal Division 6 single-judge panel (Presiding Judge Kim Min-ji) sentenced A, who was indicted on charges of fraud and attempted extortion, to 10 months in prison, suspended for 2 years, and ordered 40 hours of community service.
Prosecutors say that from September to December 2024, A received 10.39 million won from a man in his 20s, identified as B, in 26 payments under the pretext of hospital bills related to pregnancy.
A is said to have deliberately approached B, whom A had known, in September 2023, a year earlier, for the purpose of committing the crime, and then developed the relationship into a romantic one.
The day after A proposed dating to B, they had sex, and A began taking money by saying, "It looks like there's a hole in the condom, so I should go to the hospital." A also threatened to tell B's family about the pregnancy unless B paid medical expenses, citing side effects from an abortion procedure.
In addition, during the period of the crimes, A deceived B by saying a 1 million won luxury wallet had been bought as a Christmas gift and also obtained a 600,000 won wallet for A.
Presiding Judge Kim said, "The defendant tried to defraud and extort money from the victim, who was in a romantic relationship," adding, "The nature of the crime is poor, and it appears to have been a planned offense."
