Police concluded that a fire at an apartment in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, on the 30th, believed to have been caused by a gas explosion and that left a couple dead and residents injured, was the work of the husband in his 60s acting alone.
The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency held a regular press briefing on the 11th and said, "It appears the husband killed his wife, set the fire, and then jumped to his death."
Based on autopsy results and on-site evidence, police believe the husband, identified as A, killed his wife, identified as B, cut the gas line, set the fire, and then jumped to his death.
According to police, the wife in her 50s had stab wounds, and the cause of the fire is presumed to be intentional ignition due to a gas explosion.
A note in the form of a will left by A was found at the scene. The note reportedly lamented business difficulties and debt, among other financial problems. No will from B was found.
Earlier, at about 10:30 a.m. on the 30th, a fire broke out with an explosion on the 14th floor of an apartment in Naeson-dong, Uiwang, killing A in a fall and leaving B found dead in the unit's bathroom.
A total of 78 households lived in the affected apartment building, and as flames and smoke spread upward, six people, including residents of upper floors, inhaled smoke and were taken to a hospital.
