The personal details of Jang, 24, who killed a high school girl she did not know and injured a male high school student with a weapon in downtown Gwangju, will be released on the 14th.
The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency said it convened a committee on the 8th to review the disclosure of personal information and decided to post Jang's name, age and facial photo on its website for 30 days. It was reported that a "mugshot," which is taken by investigators during the arrest process to record a suspect's appearance, is being considered as the photo to be released.
Police said they decided to disclose the information after determining that the requirements set by regulations—serious harm to victims, the public's right to know, and preventing repeat offenses—were met.
This is the first time the identity of a heinous crime suspect has been disclosed in Gwangju. Jang reportedly did not consent to the disclosure decision.
Earlier, around 12:11 a.m. on the 5th, Jang allegedly stabbed high school student B, who was walking home on a sidewalk near Nambu University in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan District, Gwangju, killing her, and then swung a weapon at another high school student, C, injuring him.
In a police interview, A reportedly said the suspect committed the crime after seeing a complete stranger pass by. The suspect also was found to have claimed, "I decided to commit the crime while contemplating an extreme choice because life was no fun."
