A driver who rammed into members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) Public Transport Workers' Union Cargo Solidarity in front of the CU Jinju logistics center in South Gyeongsang during a rally, leaving casualties, has been indicted and will stand trial in custody.
According to legal sources on the 7th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Jinju Branch of the Changwon District Prosecutors' Office (Senior Prosecutor Kim Seong-hun) indicted a nonmember in his 40s, identified as A, on charges including bodily injury resulting in death.
A is accused of causing the death of one union member and injuring two others while driving a cargo truck at the site on the 20th, where Cargo Solidarity had blockaded the CU Jinju logistics center and was continuing a rally.
Police referred A on charges of murder and aggravated injury, but prosecutors changed the charge to bodily injury resulting in death after a supplementary investigation.
Prosecutors determined it was difficult to conclude that A had a motive to kill, given the circumstances at the time. In particular, they noted A's field of view was limited by union members clinging to the truck, and A stopped immediately after the crash, making it hard to infer implied intent to kill.
Prosecutors also brought four Cargo Solidarity members to trial. Member B, who drove a van and pushed through a barricade set up at the main gate of the CU Jinju logistics center, and member C, who brandished a weapon and attempted self-harm at the rally site, were indicted and detained on charges of obstructing special official duties.
