A man who posed as a professional investor and swindled people out of hundreds of millions of won was caught nearly three years after a police chase.
According to police on Apr. 29, the Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul arrested a man in his 50s, a person surnamed Jang, on fraud charges on the 24th and is investigating.
Jang is accused of posing as a professional investor to a woman he met through an application (app) in 2021 and taking about 700 million won as investment funds.
The victim reported Jang to police in 2023, but Jang disappeared after one round of questioning. The Yeongdeungpo Police Station tracking team had been pursuing Jang and arrested him on the 23rd in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi.
Jang was found to have tried to evade police pursuit by, among other things, driving a car registered under someone else's name.
It was confirmed that Jang continued similar fraud schemes in Geoje, South Gyeongsang, and in Busan, so the amount of damage could grow.
Police plan to refer Jang to prosecutors after concluding the investigation.
