Translation errors appeared in Google Translate for words that represent Korea, such as Dokdo and kimchi.
Seo Kyung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women's University, said on the 28th, "If you translate Dokdo into Japanese on Google Translate, the result comes out as 'Takeshima (竹島),' the name Japan insists on." He added, "On the Netflix variety show last year, the Japanese subtitles for Dokdo were correctly written as the Japanized transliteration 'Dokuto (ドクト).'"
He also said that when you translate kimchi into Chinese, it still comes out as "pao cai (泡菜)." Seo said, "Kimchi and pao cai are clearly different foods," and explained, "In 2021, the government revised the 'Guidelines on the Translation and Notation of Foreign Languages for Public Terms' and specified the correct Chinese notation for kimchi as 'xinqi (辛奇).'"
He also said, "Recently on Google Maps, we corrected the labeling error for 'Gyeokryeolbiyeoldo,' one of the baseline points for the territorial waters in the Yellow Sea, and the issue where a search for 'Dokdo Airport' directed users to Japan's 'Tsushima (Daemado) Airport,'" adding, "We will continue to push for changes to the translation errors for Dokdo and kimchi through sustained protests and public discussion."
