As the Samsung Electronics union has warned of a strike demanding expanded performance bonuses, Samsung Electronics shareholders also decided to hold a counterrally.
According to the industry on the 22nd, Samsung Electronics shareholders are preparing a rally of 5 million shareholders. It is scheduled to be held on the 23rd from 10 a.m. on the sidewalk at 5 Godeokgukje-daero, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi. They are currently recruiting participating shareholders.
The location where Samsung Electronics shareholders announced the rally is directly across from where the Samsung Electronics union will hold a vote-to-fight rally. The union expects about 37,000 members to attend.
A Samsung Electronics shareholder pushing the counterrally said, "In the face of the outrageous demand to shut down the world's top semiconductor plant, 5 million Samsung Electronics shareholders must rise up," and added, "Samsung has achieved global stature not only because of its employees but also thanks to shareholders' constant support and backing."
The day before, Samsung Electronics sent an official letter titled "Request for cooperation in performing normal maintenance and operation of safety protection facilities related to the rally on the 23rd" to the Super Enterprise Union and the National Samsung Electronics Labor Union. Through the letter, management said it "hopes for labor-management co-prosperity," and added, "We expect reasonable and forward-looking measures to be presented so that employees and nearby residents do not suffer any human or material damages."
The joint struggle headquarters of the Samsung Electronics union is demanding the removal of the cap on the overachievement performance incentive (OPI) and the allocation of 15% of annual operating profit. With Samsung Electronics expected to generate about 300 trillion won in operating profit this year, it is demanding a performance bonus pool of about 45 trillion won.
The union plans to launch a general strike from the 21st of next month to June 7 if management does not accept its demands. According to the union, losses during the general strike period are estimated to reach up to 30 trillion won.
