A caregiver of Russian nationality who assaulted an octogenarian patient at a long-term care hospital by hitting the patient's face with a diaper and pinching the patient's genitals was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.
According to legal sources on the 18th, Chief Judge Kim Dong-Won of the Jecheon Branch of the Cheongju District Court recently handed down the sentence to A, a Russian national in their 60s who was brought to trial on charges of violating the Welfare of Senior Citizens Act.
A is accused of, at about 6:31 p.m. on Oct. 9 last year, at a long-term care hospital in Jecheon, North Chungcheong, assaulting the face of an octogenarian patient with a diaper and repeatedly pinching the patient's genitals on the grounds that the patient was snapping at A.
Judge Kim said, "The defendant was in a position to protect the victim yet committed the crime against a victim vulnerable to crime," adding, "However, considering that the defendant is a foreign national who suffered communication problems and that conflict arising from that appears to have motivated the crime, the court determined the sentence accordingly."
