An autopsy by the National Forensic Service found that the cause of death of a 3-year-old who fell into a coma after suffering a head injury in Yangju, Gyeonggi, was head trauma.
The Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency said on the 16th it received a first verbal opinion from the National Forensic Service's autopsy of the deceased 3-year-old boy A that "it appears he died from head trauma."
Boy A was found unconscious at his home in Okjeong-dong, Yangju, on the 9th in the afternoon. Paramedics who received a report that "after a thud, we went to check and the child was crying and having convulsions" transported the child to a hospital, but the child was unconscious. The child, who did not regain consciousness, eventually died.
During the examination, the medical staff suspected head trauma and possible child abuse and reported it to police that afternoon. Determining that child abuse was possible, police urgently arrested the child's parents and asked the National Forensic Service to determine the cause of death and conduct an autopsy.
The National Forensic Service's autopsy found head trauma in Boy A, as well as signs of intestinal bleeding that appeared to have occurred a long time ago. However, the National Forensic Service reportedly conveyed that it is difficult to conclude that these injuries were caused by abuse.
Police plan to continue investigating the potential link to child abuse based on the National Forensic Service's autopsy results.
