The April 16 Foundation said it will hold the "12th anniversary memorial of the Sewol ferry disaster" at the No. 3 parking lot of Hwarang Recreation Park in Ansan on the 16th to mourn and remember the victims.
This event is expected to be attended by Choo Mi-ae, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate for Gyeonggi governor, and Kim Dong-yeon, the Gyeonggi governor. Kim is reportedly attending in a personal capacity while suspended from duty.
At the event, a second-year student at Danwon High School will read a letter to the victims and their families to convey condolences. The April 16 Choir will then conclude with a memorial chorus performance with citizens. Through this memorial, the April 16 Foundation plans to share the pain of the disaster and broaden consensus to build a safer society.
Park Seung-ryeol, chair of the April 16 Foundation, said, "Twelve years have passed since the Sewol ferry disaster, yet we continue to lose precious lives to disasters large and small," and added, "We must not forget the disaster and must remember it to build a society where the preciousness of life and safety come first."
