The identity of son-in-law Cho Jae-bok, 26, who is accused of beating his mother-in-law for hours and killing her, then putting the body in a suitcase and abandoning it, was released on the 8th.
The Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency held a committee meeting on the disclosure of personal information that day and posted Cho Jae-bok's name, age, and photo on its website. The committee said, "The cruelty of the crime and the seriousness of the damage are recognized, and there is sufficient evidence of the crime," adding, "It is deemed necessary for the public interest, including crime prevention," as the reason for disclosure.
Cho Jae-bok did not object to the disclosure of his identity, and the bereaved family also agreed to the disclosure.
Cho Jae-bok is accused of beating his 54-year-old mother-in-law to death on the 18th at their home in Jung-gu, Daegu. It was found that daughter Choi, 26, had been living together to stop Cho's domestic violence against her.
Cho Jae-bok is also accused of putting the body in a suitcase and dumping it near the Sincheon riverside in Buk-gu. After the suitcase was found on the 31st, police urgently arrested Cho and his wife, Ms. Choi, who took part in abandoning the body, based on closed-circuit TV analysis. Both suspects were later detained.
Police plan to refer Cho Jae-bok and Ms. Choi to prosecutors in custody on the 9th.
