A couple who filed a false rape report to obtain a settlement was arrested.
Jeju District Prosecutors' Office said on the 6th it indicted and detained a married couple, a 38-year-old identified as A and a 41-year-old identified as B, on charges including false accusation and obstructing the performance of official duties by deceit.
According to prosecutors, the wife, A, drank with the victim last September and then went to a hotel together. At the hotel, A sent a text to police saying "save me," and when police responded to the report, A said she had been raped and assaulted.
Her husband, B, also filed a report at the time saying his wife was missing, prompting about 20 police officers to be dispatched.
Despite the police investigation, the victim was cleared of the rape charge. However, after A filed an objection to the police findings, prosecutors launched a direct supplementary investigation.
Prosecutors instead secured evidence that A and B had conspired in advance to file a false report for a settlement, and indicted and detained them on charges of false accusation.
Prosecutors said, "We will continue to take the lead in uncovering the truth through proactive supplementary investigations," and added, "We will also respond sternly to crimes that undermine the judicial order, such as false accusations that create unjust victims of the justice system."
