Huh Kyung-young, honorary leader of the National Revolutionary Party, who is on trial in detention on charges including fraud and quasi-forcible indecent act, said on the 2nd that he would file a complaint for the crime of distorting the law against the police and prosecutors who investigated him.
Huh said this during a hearing before the Uijeongbu District Court Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Yang Cheol-han), where he was given about 10 minutes to speak. It was the first hearing since the change of the panel, and unlike his usual appearances in prison garb, Huh came to court in a suit.
In court, Huh said, "All of those are fabricated documents and this is deeply unfair," and added, "Why should I be detained here? After being in prison for 11 months, no matter how much I think about it, I did nothing wrong."
From 2019 to 2023 at Haneulgung in Yangju, Huh allegedly claimed to have spiritual powers and sold high-priced spiritual products, used corporate funds for private and political purposes, and molested followers. He was indicted and detained in June last year.
Aiming at the police and prosecutors who investigated him, he said, "The investigators at the Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency and the prosecutors who indicted me must all be punished to the end for the crime of distorting the law," and added, "I am a wealthy person, so even if it costs hundreds of billions, I will hold them legally accountable." The crime of distorting the law provides that a criminal judge, prosecutor, or person performing investigative duties who distorts the law to unlawfully or unjustly benefit someone or harm their rights and interests shall be punished by up to 10 years in prison and up to 10 years of disqualification.
Huh said, "If I had committed indecent assault, those millions of people would not come to Haneulgung," and added, "We have been providing free meals for 55 years, and I pay 3 billion won a year, so why would I embezzle money?"
Regarding the additionally consolidated case, prosecutors said, "Around 2015 at Haneulgung in Yangju, the defendant deified himself, calling himself a divine being who came from the heavens and saying he was an entity that came from Baekgung, the center of the universe, to judge humanity," and added, "He pretended that he could evade death, extend human lifespan, or cure various diseases, but in reality had no such abilities, and defrauded a victim of 5 million won." Huh's side denied this, saying, "There was no receipt of money at all."
Huh's next hearing will be held on the morning of the 21st.
