Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja, who is on trial in custody, was temporarily released until 2 p.m. on the 30th of next month due to deteriorating health.
The Criminal Agreement Division 27 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Woo In-seong) said on the 28th that it decided on the 27th to suspend execution of Han's detention. The reason for suspending Han's detention is deteriorating health. The court required Han to remain only at the hospital where treatment is being received.
Suspension of detention execution is a system that temporarily releases a defendant when it is recognized that there is an urgent reason for release, such as serious illness, childbirth, or attending a family funeral.
Earlier, citing Han's deteriorating health, the court twice decided to suspend detention execution—once for three days in Nov. last year and again for 10 days on the 10th of last month.
In Oct., Han, together with former Unification Church World Headquarters chief Yoon Young-ho, was indicted and detained on charges including destroying related evidence after receiving from People Power Party lawmaker Kweon Seong-dong police investigative information related to gambling in Oct. 2022.
