Former first officer Kim Dong-hwan, 49, who is accused of murdering an airline captain, hurled insults at the victims on the 26th as he was handed over to prosecutors.
The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency on this day sent Kim, who had been questioned at the Busanjin Police Station in the morning, to the Busan District Prosecutors' Office under arrest.
At about 9:08 a.m. that day, Kim left the Busanjin Police Station detention center and appeared bound with a rope, wearing a gray T-shirt and slippers.
As Kim boarded the transport vehicle, he shouted, "The vicious establishment thinks it can ruin a life, an individual's life, and that is 'hubris,'" and said, "It is a mad 'nemesis,' divine punishment."
Hubris in ancient Greek mythology and philosophy means excessive arrogance, and Nemesis means divine punishment. Kim did not answer questions from reporters about compensation money or how he felt about being sent to prosecutors.
A police investigation found that Kim had planned to kill a total of six colleagues, more than initially known.
Kim was found to have said in his initial police questioning that he "planned to kill four people." Police believe that if Kim had not been arrested, he would have tried to kill two more within a few days. Kim was found to have logged into the airline's flight schedule site, which only current employees can access, using another person's account to check the victims' flight information in detail.
Police applied charges of murder, attempted murder, preparation for murder, housebreaking, and violation of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, and sent Kim to prosecutors under arrest.
Kim is accused of killing Captain A, in his 50s, with whom he had worked in the past, at an apartment in Busanjin District on the 17th. The day before this crime, he attempted to harm another captain, B, in Ilsan, Goyang, Gyeonggi, but failed. On the day he killed A, he moved to Changwon, South Gyeongsang, and tried to approach Captain C, but failed and was arrested in Ulsan.
Including the deceased A, two of the people Kim targeted were former and current heads of the standard evaluation team at the airline. After his arrest, Kim consistently argued that "there is an establishment made up of graduates of the Air Force Academy (pilots) inside the airline, and because of this, I suffered harm."
Police determined that Kim selected as targets those with whom he had bad feelings due to dissatisfaction over personnel matters or compensation during his tenure. However, police said the victims were not the people who directly influenced those issues.
Kim's psychopathy assessment score was confirmed to be below the benchmark score of 25. On the 24th, through a review committee on the disclosure of personal information, police disclosed Kim's name, age, and photo on the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency website.
