Independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo, who was arrested on suspicion of taking a "1 billion won nomination bribe," asked the court to review the legality of the detention. It has been three weeks since the arrest on the 3rd.
According to legal sources on the 26th, Kang filed a request for a detention legality review with the Seoul Central District Court the previous day. It will be held at 2 p.m. that day. A detention legality review is a procedure in which the court reexamines the lawfulness of a custodial investigation and whether it needs to continue.
Kang is suspected of meeting former Seoul City Council member Kim Kyung at a hotel in Yongsan District, Seoul, in Jan. 2022, ahead of the 8th local elections, and receiving a shopping bag containing 1 billion won. At the time, Kang belonged to the Democratic Party of Korea, and Kim later received the sole nomination as the party's candidate for city council in Gangseo District, Kang's constituency in Seoul, and was elected.
On the 3rd, the court issued arrest warrants for the two, citing concerns about destruction of evidence. They are currently being held at the Seoul Detention Center.
