A former airline first officer in his 50s, a person surnamed Kim, who was arrested on suspicion of killing an airline captain, was detained on the 20th.
Eom Ji-a, a warrant judge at the Busan District Court, held a pretrial detention hearing (substantive warrant review) for Kim, who is suspected of murder, on the afternoon of the day and issued a detention warrant. The reason was concern about flight.
Just before getting into a transport vehicle prepared in the underground parking lot of the Busan Busanjin Police Station to attend the substantive warrant review that afternoon, Kim said, "It was revenge for the organized establishment's thuggish act."
Kim did not answer reporters' questions about the victim's bereaved family and others.
Kim is suspected of stabbing and killing Captain A, a former colleague, with a weapon at an apartment in Busan at 5:30 a.m. on the 17th.
On the 16th, the day before killing A, Kim allegedly ambushed Captain B, a workplace colleague, at a residence in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, and tried to strangle B to death using a tool, but fled after the attempt failed.
Right after killing A, Kim went to the residence in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, of C, another former colleague, for an additional crime but failed. Kim then fled to Ulsan and was caught by police at about 8 p.m. on the 17th, roughly 14 hours after the crime.
Kim was found to have harbored a grudge against four captains, including A, a senior from the Air Force Academy and once a workplace colleague, and to have meticulously planned the crimes for months, including scouting locations.
Kim recently scored below the threshold on the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R).
