A man in his 70s who suffocated and killed his 40-year-old daughter with a brain lesion and intellectual disability was sentenced to three years in prison.
The Daegu District Court Criminal Division 12 (Presiding Judge Jeong Han-geun) said on the 19th it sentenced a man in his 70s, identified as A, to three years in prison on a murder charge for strangling his daughter, who had a brain lesion and an intellectual disability, to death.
A was put on trial on charges of murder for, at about 9 a.m. on Oct. 23 last year, at his former wife's residence in Buk-gu, Daegu, tending to his daughter B (then 40) when she shouted loudly, soothing her by saying, "Be quiet. Your father is distressed too. Your mother is having a hard time as well, so please, just be quiet," then covering her mouth and nose and strangling her to death.
The court said, "The defendant devotedly cared for the victim for about 34 years, and appears to be experiencing considerable mental anguish, including self-reproach, after the crime."
The court explained the sentencing reasons, saying, "(The defendant's) eyesight deteriorated to the point of virtual blindness, and believing it would be difficult to care for the victim any longer, impulsively killed her; the defendant also attempted suicide, and the victim's mother, representing the bereaved family, expressed that she did not want punishment."
